Vaughan Public Libraries Suspends all In-Person Programming for 2020

The well-being of our customers and staff has always been the number one priority of Vaughan Public Libraries, which is why we are postponing all in-person programming for the remainder of 2020. COVID-19 has forced many hard decisions on us, but in many respects this one was not difficult. Our responsibility as a community is to avoid significant group gatherings to limit the potential spread of the virus, and we do not want to risk compromising the health of anyone during our daily operations. Also, we know that we are still able to deliver great programs that you can enjoy safely from home. In the weeks following the closure of our branches, we have developed a dynamic range of online programs, built for all age groups and areas of the community which we serve.

We continue to host socials, book clubs and special speakers for adults online. Programs for children of all ages include virtual storytimes, STEAM videos and downloadable activities, and in the coming weeks we will be launching our first Virtual Science Fair, Teen Summer Challenge and TD Summer Reading Club. We also offer Francophone programming as well as activities and videos in several of the other languages spoken in Vaughan. You can access our programs by visiting VPL at Home

“We look forward to the day when we can welcome people back to our libraries and to our programs”, says Rose Savage, Chair of the Vaughan Public Library Board. “However, I’m pleased that until then we are able to provide such a vibrant and broad range of online programming. Our customers have embraced our digital offerings and I would encourage everyone to check them out. You’ll find the same level of quality and creativity online that you’ve come to expect in person.”

Our branches remain closed and will reopen when it is deemed safe to do so. In the meantime, you can access a host of digital books, movies, music and more with your library card by visiting our website. You can also take advantage of our contact-free curbside pickup service to borrow items currently on the shelf at any of our three resource libraries.

Dear Vaughan Public Library Customers,

The wellbeing of our staff and customers is our number one priority. Thus, we have temporarily closed all of our locations as a preventative measure to inhibit the spread of COVID-19. As a result, all branches will be closed until further notice. All programming during this time will also be cancelled. If you have paid for a program, this will be refunded in full.

This decision aligns with the closure of publicly-funded schools in Ontario and the closure of all city recreation facilities and community centres within the City of Vaughan.

We will also be waiving fines for all items due within the time period of this closure. We request that customers please do not return any items until after our branches have reopened. This date will be posted at all branch locations, as well as on our website and social media.

We would also like to remind all customers that we do have a vast array of digital resources available for FREE from our website, including e-books, audiobooks, movies and comprehensive databases. We are also offering FREE daily online programming for all ages. This can be accessed by visiting VPL at Home.

We will continue to work closely with public health authorities and will promptly communicate if there are further impacts to the library system. Any further updates will be posted on our website  homepage: Vaughan Public Libraries.

Thank you for your support,

Margie Singleton

Chief Executive Officer, Vaughan Public Libraries
