The library is really shaping up! As of this week, spray fireproofing has commenced, exterior sheathing installation has started at the north elevation, roofing installation is underway, and site work is complete in preparation for paving in the reading garden.

A New Library is Coming to Vellore Village!

Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) is currently planning a new library location in the Vellore Village Community Centre.  The new library will be attached to the existing community centre  and will be approximately 8,000sq ft. in size. The library is projected to open in the summer of 2017.

In an effort to solicit feedback from the community to help with the design process, VPL held several focus groups with the community and children from local schools. Highlights and desired elements for the new library mentioned by the focus group participants included:

  • Abundance of natural light
  • Lots of comfortable seating
  • Incorporate elements of nature
  • A library that is bright, colourful and unique
  • Designated areas for children, teens and adults
  • Sufficient study space
  • Art wall/Display area
  • Café/refreshment/snack area
  • Collections in various formats and languages
  • Programming for all age groups
  • Volunteer opportunities for teens and adults

Unique ideas suggested by local students included:

  • Movie theatre
  • Skating rink/slides/indoor park
  • A Helping Hand to get the books you want off of the shelf
  • A magic book that comes alive when you open it
  • Library pet
