Next Year, for Sure by Zoey Leigh Peterson

next year for sure coverI just finished Next Year, for Sure by Zoey Leigh Peterson, and the first thing I can say about it is that it’s not like any other romantic story that I have read before. The story centres on a couple, Kathryn and Chris, and their attempt in being in an open relationship. Although Chris is the one who is infatuated with a young woman named Emily, Kathryn is the one who encourages him to pursue her! At first, I found this to be very strange, but as I am reading, I understand Kathryn’s reasoning for this. She wants Chris to be happy, which she believes will make her happy, but it’s not as simple as she might think. Feelings of guilt, jealousy, sadness and selfishness will eventually surface in this story.

Chris doesn’t completely abandon his relationship with Kathryn. In fact, because he is so indecisive with his feelings, he goes back and forth between Kathryn and Emily. This certainly frustrates me as these two women clearly deserve better, and yet, I was intrigued to see how these relationships play out. After reading this story, I can say that I am pleased with how each character ended up. I can’t reveal anything else, so if you’re interested, grab a copy of Next Year, for Sure!

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapeña

the couple next door coverI read The Couple Next Door a few weeks ago and I still can’t get over how intense and thrilling it was! Normally, I’m a very slow reader and it can take me about two weeks to read an entire book, but I read this in less than 3 days! I was so excited to talk about it when I finished it, but a bit hesitant as I didn’t want to give too much away! However, I can’t contain my excitement any longer and must rave about it!

First off, I was a bit weary to start reading this when I found out that a child abduction was at the centre of the story, as this is a very sensitive and emotional topic that I wasn’t sure I could handle. However, I decided to read it anyways, and I’m so glad I did! Yes, there were emotional and heartbreaking moments throughout the story, but these moments made me connect and sympathize with the characters all the more, especially Anne, the distraught mother who will do anything to get her baby back. Manchester by the Sea (directed by Kenneth Lonergan)

In this heart-gripping drama, Casey Affleck portrays a man, Lee Chandler, who came backImage result for manchester by the sea to his hometown to deal with the passing of his brother. Lee found out that his brother’s will is for him to be his nephew’s guardian. While trying to build a relationship with his teenage nephew, Lee found himself caught in the past that he does not want to remember. Manchester by the Sea is sorrowful and devastating, however, the sadness and nuances in this film are so real that it made me feel very much alive. The story did not try to force a “perfect” ending. Instead, it let the narrative flow, let the events unfold, and paused at a natural place.

I have never really noticed Casey Affleck in any other film, but his performance in Manchester by the Sea is truly memorable. His Golden Globe for the role of Lee Chandler is well-deserved (despite of what he might have done in real life).
