cover of small admissionsWhat would you do if you were dumped by what you thought was your true love in the middle of an airport before heading off to Paris? In Small Admissions, Kate faces this reality and becomes depressed. She loses interest in working, maintaining a social life, and simply, just doing something with her life. This is understandable, especially when she had let go of her aspirations in graduate studies to be with her “true love” in Paris.

So, what does Kate do now that she’s heartbroken and with no job? Fortunately, her sister, Angela, vows to lift her spirits and help her get her life back on track. Angela is a caring and concerned sister; yet, despite her good intentions of helping her sister out, I find her to be too overprotective and judgmental. Kate is on the way of getting her life back on track, and even so, Angela does not trust her and firmly believes that Kate will fall apart at any moment. I find Angela’s untrustworthiness and lack of confidence in her sister disappointing. However, what would have been more disappointing is if Kate didn’t have the confidence in herself, but I’m glad she did and had the determination to succeed in her career. Continue reading →

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapeña

the couple next door coverI read The Couple Next Door a few weeks ago and I still can’t get over how intense and thrilling it was! Normally, I’m a very slow reader and it can take me about two weeks to read an entire book, but I read this in less than 3 days! I was so excited to talk about it when I finished it, but a bit hesitant as I didn’t want to give too much away! However, I can’t contain my excitement any longer and must rave about it!

First off, I was a bit weary to start reading this when I found out that a child abduction was at the centre of the story, as this is a very sensitive and emotional topic that I wasn’t sure I could handle. However, I decided to read it anyways, and I’m so glad I did! Yes, there were emotional and heartbreaking moments throughout the story, but these moments made me connect and sympathize with the characters all the more, especially Anne, the distraught mother who will do anything to get her baby back. Scrappy, Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick

Cover of BookI was so excited when Scrappy, Little Nobody came for me! I started reading it right away and could not put it down! In the beginning, I didn’t know what to expect since Anna Kendrick doesn’t often reveal much about her personal life in her interviews. However, she tells countless stories in this book that are so vivid and detailed. Sometimes, I wondered how she could remember all of what has happened to her, but then, I realized that she’s lived through such exciting and thrilling experiences that could not be forgotten!

What I truly appreciated from reading this book is that Anna was completely honest and direct from beginning to end. I learned that although Anna is a famous and talented actress now, she doesn’t let the fame get to her. She doesn’t want to feel entitled, and will always feel uncomfortable about her appearance, home, and money. She not only explains her struggles as an actress, but even while she was not cast in productions. She expresses her sincere thoughts and feelings, especially when talking about her family, boyfriends, and roommates. Telling stories about these people in her life and some of the experiences she went through reminds me that she has ups and downs like anyone else.

So, you want to know more about Anna’s life? Read her book! If you’re like me, you will admire Anna Kendrick even more, which I didn’t even know was possible!
