What is a Vinyl Cutter?

A vinyl cutter is a cutting device, usually on desktop or stand, which can make signs, banners, stickers, heat-transfer logos, etc. using various materials inlcuding (obviously!) vinyl, cardstock, papers, magent sheets, thin felt fabric, and some soft chipboards (it depends on the power/force on the machine).

This machine us usually connected to a computer (or loaded by USB) and computer designed vector files with patterns and letters are directly cut on the materils fed into the machine. These files can be made by the specific software of that machine or on any vector-editing software and then opens on the machine software.

Most of the vinyl cutter software let customers to trace regular images and change them to vector format.

Vinyl Cutter at PBRL

The Creation Space at PBRL, Make It, is equipped by a Roland GS-24 vinyl cutter machine. This is an industrial-level machine can cut various materials precisely and effectively, a large and fast scale. We will know about this machine and how to use it in the next lesson.

Vinyl Cutter Booking and Costs

For using the vinyl cutter at PBRL, the booking isn’t mandatory. You can always drop by and use the machine as long as you have a valid VPL card, and the machine is available. However, we recommend booking the machine in advance if you need help from the staff or you want to be sure that the machine is available at least 2 hours for you.

Please go to the booking page on Share It, select the Equipment option and fill out the form for booking this device.

For booking a service or device, these notes are essential:

  • Have a valid VPL card in good standing.
  • Print and sign a Customer Agreement Form and return it on your first booking.
  • Bookings must be made at least 3 days in advance.
  • The vinyl cutter can be booked for a maximum 2-hour. If nobody else wants to use it, you can continue using it.
  • Design can be in SVG (opened on Inkscape), JPG, PNG.

If you’ve already filled out and submitted the Customer Agreement Form for using another service, lab or equipment in any VPL creation spaces, you don’t have to do it again.

Cost of using the Roland Machine at PBRL

There is no cost for using the machine at PBRL so if you want to use your own material, it’s totally free. If you want to use the vinyl materials we offer, the cost is $1.00 (plus HST) for each 6 by 12 inches material.
