Behind the Controller

For this month’s post, we’re going to need some context. You see, my siblings and I are big gamers (though you might have already guessed that from some of my previous posts). The end of this month also happens to be my brother’s birthday, and because ribbing my siblings on the internet is part of the job of Big Sister, I can honestly say it’s always been a struggle to find something to do to celebrate his next trip around the sun. But, as the planets have mysteriously aligned for this singular point in time, he actually found what he wanted to do before we had to start bothering him about it.

Now that my obligatory teasing is out of the way, back to the first part. The thing my brother wants to do to ring in his next year is to go see Backrooms. It’s a stacked cast horror film based on a short YouTube video posted by the then sixteen-year-old director, inspired by an anonymous forum post that escaped into the wider internet. Yeah. Quite the rabbit hole. It escaped so far that there’s even a video game adaptation of it, which is crazy to think about when all the original post was, was of an unsettling, empty yellow hallway with an equally unsettling short story about blipping through reality (turns out it was just a well-composed photograph of an under-renovation Wisconsin store, though. The more you know). But when my brother first showed any of this to me, I had barely an idea of what it was. I looked at the movie trailer, the game trailer, and part of the Wikipedia page and thought, “wait… isn’t this just House of Leaves?”

We’re halfway to Halloween! Books and Movies to help with the wait (and celebrate spring)

Yes! We’re doing it again! We are putting Halloween into a part of the year it doesn’t usually go! Why? Because it’s fun and we can!

Just one example of a scary Easter Bunny costume. Apparently, the user who posted this on Flickr found it in an antique shop. A cursed antique shop?

The end of April and the start of May is the halfway point to Halloween. For Halfway to Halloween, or Halfoween, fans are happy to mark the occasion as we start counting down the last six months of the year to the big day. Kinda like Christmas in July, but awesome! Horror-centric vehicles like Shudder spend all of April celebrating the halfway mark. Some places even have events to give everyone an early taste of scary season. If something like Easterween isn’t really catching on (though I ended up embracing it a little this year, sharing creepy pictures of old-timey Easter Bunny costumes with friends who also love horror) this is still a great way to put some creep factor into your spring season.

Cat Person/Dog Person, Pet Person?

Here’s something I never thought I’d say/type: I miss our cat. I’ve always been a dog person, though I never had one of my own, and I thought that when I finally had room for a pet in my life, it would be a dog. Enter my now-wife and her cat Loki, and I can see the appeal of the temperamental little murder machines. It probably helps that Loki’s personality is more dog-like, and he would sooner run from a mouse than kill it, but he’s grown on me, and having to leave him with a friend while we move/renovate has made me realize how true this is. While it can be irritating being trapped on the couch because Loki won’t get off my lap, maybe he’s just looking out for me and telling me to slow down a bit. So, while thinking of my own pet, I decided to highlight some items in our collections that focus on pets and their bonds with us1.

The cover of The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford

Thinking of Loki being far from home triggered a memory from my childhood, a memory of a golden retriever, bull terrier, and Himalayan cat trekking through the wilderness to find their owners. I’m aging myself here, as the movie came out in 1993, but I thought I’d search our catalogue for it anyway, and lo and behold, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey is in our collection. I remember watching this one as a kid, then, as kids do, immediately re-watching it. After rewinding the VHS, of course. I have no nostalgia for that. Give me a DVD and the ability to instantly skip to any part of the film over having to wait for physical media to wind through spools any day. So, for those unfamiliar with the movie, it follows the three animals on their journey through the Sierra Nevada mountain range to find the family that they think abandoned them during a move… I’m glad Loki doesn’t have this kind of homing instinct. At least, I don’t think he does. He somehow knew the parking garage of the condo despite only ever being in it in his astronaut bag, though his does not look like a Pokeball. I’ll have to ensure he doesn’t try to bolt for “home” when we have him in the new house. Okay, no more side-tracks.
