Stoicism, Wabi Sabi and Constantly Moving Targets

Vague, confusing title.  Or perhaps intriguing and poetic?  Maybe both?  Neither?   Did you know that 1 in 10 people in the US is taking some form of psychiatric medication?  Did you know that the US is one of only 2 countries in the world that allows direct to consumer drug advertising?  When the Reagan administration was moving to pass legislation to first allow this advertising, the heads of many pharmaceutical companies actually opposed it.  Pharma heads were indeed a different breed at that time.  Slowly, slowly, one small decision at a time, one justification at a time, a whole culture shifts and a whole industry, …..well, darkens. Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Civic Centre Resource Library’s Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, September 10!

Sept 10 Ribbon Cutting

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Mayor, members of Council and the Vaughan Public Library Board.

At Vaughan Public Libraries’ (VPL) ninth location, thousands of community members and their families enjoyed fun-filled activities such as demos in the library’s new digital media lab (includes a recording studio and green room), face painting, booktalks, storytimes and appearances by Kids’ CBC Patty & Bookaboo.

The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain

The Red Notebook book coverOne phrase to sum up Antoine Laurain’s The Red Notebook is that it’s “short and sweet”! The story begins with a woman named Laure being robbed of her purse, and a bookseller named Laurent discovers it near his place later on. From this brief summary, one could assume that this story would fall under the mystery genre. However, this is not like any other mystery that I have read before. The mystery is not figuring out who had stolen the purse, but rather, the mystery is on Laurent attempting to find out who the purse belongs to. His intention is to return the purse to her, but he is distracted with what he finds in Laure’s purse and becomes fascinated with her. Oddly enough, Laurent’s fascination with Laure was not at all disturbing and just made me all the more fascinated with Laure too! Continue reading
