Page to Screen: Fall Movies Based on Books

It’s September 23 and you know what that means: summer is officially over and it’s autumn’s time to shine. Out of the many reasons to love the fall (cool weather, scarves, plaid, pumpkin spice EVERYTHING), one of my favourites is the kick-off of the new movie season. It’s time for our beloved superheroes and engineered dinosaurs to take a seat and open up the floor to more serious fare. It’s time for the “award season” to begin. Of course, each year this season dependably serves us several book adaptations, and this year is no different. So what are some adaptations to look out for? In the interest of keeping the list relatively short, I’ve left out the obvious blockbusters (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and The Martian). Remember, you can always check out a copy of the books at your local VPL branch before they hit the big screen!

Learning new things

It is now easier than ever to learn new things, and to learn from the best.   I just finished an Excel 2010 course through Universal Class.  Universal Class is a place where you can take online courses for free.  All you need is your library card.  Set up an account here.  Choose from hundreds of courses, receive feedback from a real live instructor, work your way through numbered modules, assignments and exams.  At the end receive a certificate of completion to frame and hang on your wall:

Civic Centre Resource Library – Sept. 18

This week at the Civic Centre Resource Library, exterior sheathing installation continues to progress around the building perimeter and work is ongoing at the south side. Glazing installation has commenced and panels are being installed around the reading garden as well as the north elevation. Hardscaping activities started along the south with the drilling and installation of sonotubes for piers.

Interior insulation has commenced at the adult collection.

Glazing installation at the Reading Garden is ongoing.
