The Crossroads of Should and Must- a MUST read!

Should and Must

There are times in your life, when things- quotes, movies, people… or books- find you at the exact right moment.  A moment of fate. A life changing second.  A “meant-to-be” instance. This book did that. It found me, exactly when I needed it to.

I have tried to read many books about finding my creativity, about finding my passions, about finding myself. If I am honest, I admit that I struggled in reading those books. I skimmed through them, I let them sit around until they had to be returned, and I rarely finished reading them. It was tough, you know?

These books sit you down, throw information at you about brain stimulation and what it means to be creative and what it feels like to live your dreams and find positivity and why aren’t you following the right path, and who are you?, and, and, and…. AH! My brain! I was overwhelmed. I felt pressured. I felt like I was not doing what I could to live a happy and creative life, and frankly, it made me feel bad. So I put the book down.

Until I stumbled upon The Crossroads of Should and Must: Find and Follow Your Passion by Elle Luna. This book hits you deep. I mean it. It asks you all of the questions you have been avoiding. It makes you take a real look at your life- what it is, what is missing, and why it is missing. But it does all of this in the exact right way. A real way that acts as your voice within. It does not intimidate, nor does it make you feel guilty. It does not overwhelm you with vague meanderings, nor does it bore you. It inspires you. It makes you look at your life in an objective way. And it reminds you that change can be simple. SIMPLE! Who knew? Luna breaks down the notions of should and presents the value of must in an attainable way. (Warning: may cause a life breakthrough)

Elle Luna is a designer, visual artist and writer. The Crossroads of Should and Must began as an online essay which feverishly went viral.  She found herself in Bali (where she organizes a community art objective involving textiles and local craftsmen), sat herself down, and turned her ideas into the most exhilarating and motivating book I have read in a very long time.

Another reason why this book captured my attention so intensely was because it is extremely visual. Luna plays with fonts, with water colour paints, with doodles and with proportion to speak to you in an innately visual way. The monotony of the page is broken up with bright colours and fonts that are screaming at you to be your best self in the best way you can. She also happened to find all of the most awesome quotes that ever existed and inserted them into her book seamlessly.

I urge you to read this book- if you are feeling lost, if you are not lost at all. I urge you to read this book- if you miss your creative voice, if you are looking to find one. I urge you to read this book- if you need some inspiration, if you feel it is finally time to start inspiring yourself.

“Choosing Must is the greatest thing we can do with our lives.”
―     Elle Luna
