LYDIA LOVELESS – real country

Lydia Loveless - RealI’ve said it before: we all should be listening to country music (if you already are, then perhaps listen to more of it). And if we’re not at all …well, there is just so much great country music out RIGHT NOW.

Really, there is no excuse.

Real – the new Lydia Loveless  – suits these priorities just fine. It’s good, gritty, tattooed, heart-breakin’, world-weary, butt-kickin’ country fun.

On Hoopla now.

PINK – just go listen to this album

igr_634457723825_270Just do this. Go listen to the reissue of the MONSTER Boris album Pink. Boris is my current favorite band and Pink was my number one album, way back in 2006.

I can’t overstate this: please go listen to Pink. This new version has an ENTIRE SECOND ALBUM of unreleased material. And the original album remains the very best punk / hard rock / metal(ish) recording of the last 15 years or so.

Hoopla. Not now. But right now.

PUP – quality catchy, melodic, heavy, fast punk

PUPI’m always happy when silly genre terms fall away into irrelevancy. Take “emo” for example.

Ugh. I remember a time when (many) music snobs (I’m guilty) derided emo bands as too poppy. Too overwrought. Not punk enough. Fronted by Jared Leto.

Well, I’m happy to see the term emo put to rest. It’s all good; I mean what’s not like? It’s catchy, melodic, heavy, fast punk music. And you know who makes quality ̶e̶m̶o̶. I mean, quality catchy, melodic, heavy, fast punk music?

Toronto’s PUP. Check out The Dream is Over, their new album on Hoopla.

NEW KANYE WEST – we actually have it…

the-life-of-pablo-album-cover_art_nbmwimTrue story. We have the new Kanye West album to stream or download.  Take Kanye or leave Kanye (and I mostly ignore any non-music Kanye news and nonsense), I hope most will admit that he is a remarkable musical artist. I’ve liked everything he’s done, but since My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and onwards I’ve considered his work to be some of the best that pop music can offer.

So it seems remarkable to me that I only heard The Life of Pablo a week or so ago. It looked like – earlier this year when the album was released on the streaming service Tidal – that the album would never be available on any other service or in any other store. West owns a stake in Tidal and Tidal’s been struggling …so yeah. I was annoyed because I really wanted to hear this new Kanye but no way am I going to be strong armed into a buy-in I don’t want. Kanye doesn’t want to sell me his new album …well, I guess I’m not going to hear his new album.

Thankfully he changed his mind and The Life of Pablo is now available everywhere. Including our Hoopla. And I haven’t yet spent too much time with it, but so far – it’s excellent.

MARGO PRICE – 2016 first quarter top ten

Midwest Farmer's Daughter1. Margo Price – Midwest Farmer’s Daughter
2. David Bowie – Blackstar
3. Kendrick Lamar – untitled unmastered
4. Loretta LynnFull Circle
5. Rotting Christ – Rituals
6. Anderson .Paak – Malibu
7. The I Don’t Cares – Wild Stab
8. Basia Bulat – Good Advice
9. M. Ward – More Rain
10. Rae Spoon – Amour

That’s my top ten favourite albums, so far for 2016. We’re only three months in and there has already been a tonne of great music. The Margo Price album  –Midwest Farmer’s Daughter – absolutely tops the list. If you like country music (and you should like country music), then there’s plenty to love. And if you want to get into country music (and if you aren’t into country music yet, well…), there’s lots here to open the door.

And the best song (‘Four Years of Chances’) is a throwback to classic Fleetwood Mac. So it has that going for it too. Check it out. Please.
