R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me!

So, there has been quite a lot of talk in the news these days about a certain radio host on CBC as well as a “pick-up artist” who helps teach men how to pick up women, and I would like to think that you have heard at least a few conversations regarding what’s happened/happening with these two individuals, and thought about why this is something that is making headlines, and – even more importantly - why you should be thinking about it.

So, to bring you in the loop if you’ve missed some of this, I’m referring to the current news of ex-CBC radio host, Jian Ghomeshi, and “dating guru”, Julien Blanc.

The Ghomeshi situation has highlighted the fact that there is still a very strong stigma about going to the authorities for help if you’re ever assaulted (sexual, or otherwise) and the Blanc situation seems to be showing evidence that suggests that the progress we as a society have made toward gender equality seems to be not as much as we had thought.
Basically, regardless of peoples’ sexual orientation/preferences, respect should be at the forefront of any and all interactions, especially when we’re talking about ‘romantic’ encounters.

I mean, yes – everyone has their own way of interacting, but there are some things that should be very clearly crossing the line and the WRONG way to go.  I think the saddest thing with Blanc is how many followers are so keen to attend one of his ‘training sessions’ – and those things aren’t cheap, either!  Honestly, it just seems mind-boggling.

So, to add my *free* two cents of wisdom: if you like someone, don’t be a jerk…the whole pulling pig-tails thing that is so gr. 2, really should stay in gr. 2.  I mean, even Higa figured it out!!

Time To Thrive

spark of vivacity179 Photo And this just in – Ellen Page – the Canadian actress whom many of you know from movies such as Juno, X-Men, and Whip-It (which happens to be based on a bookREAD!!!) was a keynote speaker at the inaugural Time To Thrive conference which is a human rights campaign focusing on equality and the LGBT community.  Now, the big thing that all the news releases are saying in the headlines for this event is the fact that Ellen officially came out during her speech.  And I think that’s all fine and dandy – good for her, that must have been quite intimidating to do in front of such an audience….but what I think is so amazing is her actual speech.

Take a listen.  Well said and something I think – regardless of who you are or what you believe in – is a very important truth on how we need to really start taking care of each other by respecting each other.  When we look at all the horrible things that have made the headlines in the past year, it really seems like this is something that a lot of people have forgotten.  Anywho, Ellen Page:

Hey everyone!!!!  Wowzer, well I’m going to say that 2013 went by realllllllll fast like.  Like really, really.  Definitely an interesting year, I’d say!  Much wow. Very 2013.

It seems kind of like with tech and the online world going as ballistic as it has been (and speeding up, no less!), that these past few years we’ve pretty much been seeing the viral world constantly trying to outdo itself.  Which of course has then provided us with countless hours of entertainment as we sit and stare blindly at our lovely screens, be they computers, tablets, or phones….

And, to celebrate the craziness (and also to celebrate the new year…and the fact that we all have power once more (YAY electricity!!!), allow me to present a year in review, courtesy of YouTube:

Catch all those references???? (and recognize the faces???) That lovely combo included a whole ton of the big hitters from trending videos in 2013. Haven’t seen some of the vids before? Take a look here for the playlist of the top 10 trending videos in Canada over 2013.

Oh, and of course, cause I love it so muchly, in case you haven’t stumbled across this, our dear Pharrell Williams (oh, Nerd, you are so young at face! Seriously! He seems to be aging backwards!!), put together a 24 hour music video of his song Happy.

And lastly, because I uberly much loved this movie – waaaaaayyyyyy better than the first installment – Ed Sheeran’s awesomely spectacular end credit song for The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug:

And that should get things going nicely, I think. Bring on 2014!!

Annnnnnnd, back to what I wanted to talk about for today cause it is living, breathing, epic awesomeness.

Yesterday marked the final day of Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield’s command of the International Space Station.  For those of you who have been all “Meh, space.  yeah, we’ve been to the moon.  Whatevs”, I’m afraid you’ve been sadly mislead.

While all the space agencies around the world have been trying to figure out ways to encourage the worlds’ interest once more in space, all they had to do was get a 53 year old Canadian with a boss mustache and away we go!

Hadfield left Earth on December 19. 2012, arrived at the ISS – meaning International Space Station for those of you who can’t read awesome – on December 21, and became the first Canadian to command the ISS.  And over the next few months he did what all the fancy space agencies have been trying to do – he made space cool.

Clickie HERE to read a cool article about stuff that Hadfield’s done and get your GO CANADA vibe on.

And to be even more cool, Hadfield has also shared with us his final goodbye from space in a glorious video:

Chris is returning to Earth today, with live coverage starting at 3:50pm….seriously people – he is going to be burning through our atmosphere in a few short hours. Could this be any more epic?? I think not. More news on Hadfield and his awesomeness HERE

And if this has got anyone in the mood for space books:

And for those who of you aren’t that in the know with modern happenings, the final book in the trilogy has been named – Allegiant will conclude the dystopian trilogy and is supposed to hit the shelves on October 22nd…not that long a wait, but still.

Hopefully the final book redeems itself as I was sorely disappointed with book 2 – more specifically, with Tris.  That girl took a downward turn that spiraled waaaaaayyyy down into the lower depths of pathetic charaters.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Tris has now gotten some sense knocked into her.  We shall see.

Anywho, to ends things on a fun note, look at this!!
