It’s time to meet the Muppets!

If you take one part trade-marked puppets, one part adult-oriented inside jokes, one part musical numbers, one part celebrity cameos and one part just plain cute, you start to get an idea of what The Muppets add up to.

I and my Muppet-crazed roommate caught it this weekend, and I do believe it met all of our expectations.  The Muppets is intended to introduce a new generation and re-introduce older ones to these felt creatures.  As we’ve pointed out before (and again), Muppets are impossible to avoid right now, and after so long out of the public eye, it’s a welcome return for their fans.

The Muppets embraces that fact in it’s storyline.  The Muppet Studios is about to be demolished by oil magnate Tex Richman (Chris Cooper).  Long time Muppet fan Walter (who happens to be made of felt himself) takes it upon himself, along with his brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Gary’s girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams), to reunite the Muppet gang and put on a show to raise the money needed to save the studio.  Be forwarned, there are a lot of Muppets, so you’ll see a lot of different characters, but the core group is there, consisting of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, Rowlf, The Swedish Chef, Electric Mayhem, etc.  Muppets as far as the eye can see!

All the trademarks of a Muppet movie are here, including celebrity cameos (I won’t mention who, but keep your eyes peeled for quite a few famous faces), musical numbers (both original songs and some classic pop), and some self-aware, inside humor.  But here’s the thing; when you mix it all together, you end up with something quite unique.  It might feel a little old-fashioned, but that’s okay, because it’s sweet and charming, and genuinely touching in places.  And it’s funny!  Watching Gonzo blow himself up is funny!

So give it a try.  Here’s one of their parody trailers that they’ve been putting out through the year; this one is based on the trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  Always good for a chuckle.

Welcome back Muppets!
