3D Flashback: A Glimpse Into The Great War

Did you know that 3D design and optics have been around for quite some time? Only back then it wasn’t known as 3D or virtual reality. In the 1800s when you wanted to experience far off places, famous people and fashions, or an ongoing storyline, you wouldn’t access your smartphone or VR headsets. You would grab your stereoscope and send some quality time sifting through your stereograph collection.

You know what? I did just that a few days ago and I discovered something fascinating hiding at the bottom of my collection (yep, I collect these things because this is the closest you can get to getting a front-row seat into a moment in time). There were two stereographs dating back from the First World War that showed what trench warfare looked like up close and personal. Haunting stuff. You can actually see the expressions on some of the soldiers faces frozen in that single moment. With the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge taking place on April 9th, 2017 I thought I’d share these images with you.  Maker culture has a far reaching and long lasting impact that goes beyond any of us.  Lest we forget.

  1. Thanks for sharing, Sarah. This is fascinating stuff! VR is such a great way to immerse yourself in history. We have “Diggers” on the Oculus Rift, which brings users right into the trenches. I haven’t played it, but read that it’s pretty dark and intense.
