I recently read Night Road by Kristin Hannah which was part of our “Fast Track” collection. I found Night Road to be a compelling, heart wrenching story which was difficult to put down. Jude Farraday – the central character – has devoted her life to the raising of her teenage twins – Zach and Mia. The story opens when they are sixteen and on the cusp of adulthood. Both of their lives are intertwined with Lexi Baill, a former foster child who has become Mia’s best friend and Zach’s girlfriend. As much as she tries not to, Jude finds herself incessantly worrying over her increasingly independent children. Then after a party on a summer night, tragedy strikes and Jude’s worst fears are realized. Hannah’s skills as a writer play out throughout the rest of the novel taking the reader deep into the hearts and souls of her characters as she calls forth deep emotions. This well crafted story speaks to the themes of love, hope, forgiveness and the fortitude of the human spirit.
