This is my all time favorite movie. I would also recommend Woody Allen's "Play it again Sam" and "Round up the Usual Suspects : The Making of Casablanca." by Aljean Harmetz.
Unfortunatley neither available in VPL

I also loved this movie. You summed it up well in your description "romance, nostalgia, intellectural dialogue, etc."

That's fantastic that the group enjoyed the book! I really liked it too. Major Pettigrew is such a sympathetic character, and goes through such intellectual and emotional changes in the course of the story. And, I thought the supporting cast were a lot of fun as well.

Just wanted to add that Rebecca linked to "Three Plums in One", a compendium of the first three books in the series. If you want to check out just the paperback, we recently received several movie tie-in versions and they can be found here: http://catalogue.vaughanpl.info:8080/lib/item?id=chamo:625652&theme=vaughan

I have to say, I got a little less excited about the movie when I heard it was going to be Katherine Heigl playing Stephanie Plum. She's just not how I'd picture Stephanie. But, Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur, and Sherri Shepherd as Lula are sure to be pretty funny.

I really enjoy listening to the audiobooks of these in the car. They are nice and lighthearted for while you're driving, and the woman who reads the stories does really funny voices for the characters.

I am also embarrassed to admit that I voluntarily read this, but I did so because I had a friend who had been severely mistreated by a boyfriend (dumped, undumped, dumped again, etc) who just was not able to admit the terrible guy needed to be dropped, and fast.

When you're scanning this book looking for patterns of ill behaviour for a friend's ex -- that is, when it's not personal to you -- it's a lot easier to enjoy the comedy and see the wisdom behind the words!

Have you heard that scientists have isolated and mapped the genome of the Black Plague? Sounds outrageous, but it is true - I heard it on the CBC a week or so ago. Check out the story here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2011/10/12/black-death-genome.html
