3. What is a PIN and what is it good for?
A PIN is necessary to access your library account online and to access databases. You can set up your PIN at any VPL branch.
Your PIN protects access to your library record. As a result, it is important to choose a number other people won't be able to guess easily. Once your PIN is set up, keep it in a safe place and don't give the number to anyone.
If you forget your PIN, you must visit a VPL branch with a parent, bringing with you some valid identification. Staff there will be able to activate a new PIN for you.
4. How long can I keep different things out?
Books and CD's can be taken out of the library for 3 weeks. You may renew the items you have signed out up to 3 times as long as no one else has requested the same item. Videos, DVD's and magazines can be signed out for 1 week and
can be renewed 3 times as long as no one else has requested them.
Note: Items that are very popular sometimes have their loan period reduced from 3 weeks to 2 weeks and are not allowed to be renewed.
5. What do I do if the book I want is signed out?
If the book, video, DVD, or CD you want is signed out you can place a hold. Holds can be placed 3 ways:
i) By calling your local branch and asking reference staff to place the hold for you.
ii) By going to the VPL Web site and searching the library catalogue. You
will need your library card and your PIN.
iii) By visiting any branch of VPL and placing the hold yourself using the public access computers in the library, or by asking the reference staff to help you.
6. How do I renew the different things on my card?
You can renew items on your library card 3 different ways.
i) By using the library catalogue. Click on the red library card to login to your record. Note: You will need your 4 digit PIN. Once you have logged in, scroll down until you see the items you have checked out. Tick off the boxes next to the items you would like to renew then click the 'renew' button. Double-check that your item was able to be renewed. An item may not be able to be renewed if it is requested, a fast track item or if you have already renewed it three times.
ii) Calling the automated renewal number - (905) 709-0672.
iii) Calling or visiting any branch of Vaughan Public Libraries.
7. How much is the fine if I return something late?
| Resource |

| Books, Talking Books, CDs & Magazines |
$0.25 per day to a maximum of $4.00 per item |
| Videos & DVDs |
$2.00 per day to a maximum of $10.00 per card |
8. Can I check my library record from home?
Yes. You can place holds, and view your library record online.
To place a hold, find the item you would like to place a hold on, then click 'request'. Next, type in your library card number and select the library you want to pick it up at, then click 'submit'.
To view your library record, go to the catalogue, then click on the red library card to login to your record.
Remember, you'll need your library card and PIN numbers to access your record online.
9. What do I do if I lose my library card?
Call any VPL immediately. Staff will stop your card so no one else can use it. A new card can be picked up at any branch of VPL for $2.00. Remember to bring

The library also has great online tools that are available from home to anyone with a VPL library card and PIN number, and in all VPL branches.
