New Teen Lounge at Pierre Berton Resource Library

Pierre Berton Resource Library is building a new teen lounge and construction is well underway. With Emily Carr High School and the Al Palladini Community Centre both neighbouring the library, it was decided that a space specifically for teens needed to be designed.

The old circular reading lounge was chosen as the space. This area is ideal as it is on the ground floor of the library and takes advantage of the library’s north-facing windows for ample natural light.

After demolishing the old reading lounge, new carpeting was installed and electrical requirements were completed. A vast wall of glass surrounding the whole area was put in place – 22 sheets of thick glass now make up the wall of the teen lounge. Millwork was fitted to the inside and outside of the area to provide enough shelf space to hold the entire Young Adult collection.

The teen lounge is soon to be completed with the addition of booth seating around the inside edges of the space, allowing a great space for groups and leaving the centre of the space open for other uses. Two of the booths will have sound domes, allowing teens to listen to music, while not disturbing others around them.
